Can a breastfeeding woman get pregnant?

Question

My wife had a baby boy three months back. She is still breastfeeding. We have had sex twice since the birth, and she hasn’t had a period. Could she be pregnant?

Answer

Highly intensive breastfeeding (like every three hours or so) has a marked contraceptive effect. However, most doctors would not recommend relying on breastfeeding alone as a method of contraception.
Breastfeeding will usually prevent the woman from having periods – so this may be why your wife hasn’t menstruated yet.

From what you say, the odds are against your wife being pregnant. But if there is any doubt in your minds, it would be better to go to the chemists and buy a pregnancy test kit.
